Expanding the voice of Native America

Native Public Media's mission is to promote healthy, engaged, independent Native communities by strengthening and expanding Native American media capacity and by empowering a strong, proud Native American voice.

The only organization of its kind, Native Public Media is wholly dedicated to building and advancing Native access to, ownership of, and participation in media.  Since its inception in 2004,  Native Public Media has focused on using media as a tool for advancing economic development, preserving language and culture, promoting health and education, and facilitating engagement by Native Americans with the issues that affect our Nations and communities.

To ensure that all Native people across the United States have the capacity to participate actively in a multi-faceted, multi-platform media landscape, Native Public Media is committed to three major strategic initiatives:

 

  1. Advancing Native Media Access, Ownership and Control 
    Native Public Media works to substantially advance the capacity of Native people to access diverse media, to control the production and distribution of Native content, and to acquire and develop our own media outlets.   Read more...

    To advance the creation of participatory and sustainable media throughout Native America, Native Public Media is creating a comprehensive blueprint that articulates a vision of what Native media could become and that delineates diverse, customizable, culturally appropriate and scalable strategies for getting there.   Read more...

  3. Building Capacity for Native Participation in Media
    Native media has a central role to play in enabling Natives to tell our own stories, solve our own problems, and shape our own future.  Native Public Media works with partners to facilitate the production of content, and to develop the resources and assets needed to operate media outlets, utilize new platforms, and create media systems inspire and facilitate active engagement by Native people.   Read more...
