Native Public Media and Native Broadcast Stations Will Join A National George Floyd Remembrance Day

On Tuesday, June 9, 2020, Floyd will be laid to rest at a private ceremony in Houston, his hometown. Radio stations nationwide will play Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come,” in commemoration of the life of George Floyd. The song, known as a Civil Rights Movement anthem, will be played at 3pm EST by radio stations coast-to-coast.

Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020 has been the focus of international calls for redress and reform. Many communities, including Native American communities, are struggling with the polarizing issues of racial injustice, police misconduct, and missing and murdered indigenous women.

"Music is healing, and speaks for us when there are no words," said Loris Taylor, Native Public Media President and Executive Director. "We will come together across Indian Country to join with the world to grieve, act, and heal as a community and as nations that wants a better tomorrow for all our children. We will also honor the memory of George Floyd and offer prayers for his family and loved ones."

NPM joins the National Federation of Community Broadcasters in this nationwide remembrance.
