Albuquerque, NM – The State of New Mexico has taken decisive action to support Tribal radio stations by approving one-time funding to offset the loss of federal support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). This appropriation will help stabilize NM Tribal stations as they work to strengthen local operations and develop long-term sustainability strategies. These include stations that serve the Navajo Nation, Jicarilla Apache Tribe, and Zuni Nation.

The funding comes at a critical moment. Earlier this year, Congress eliminated CPB funding, creating a significant gap for Tribal stations that provide vital news, cultural programming, and emergency information to Native communities. New Mexico’s action ensures that these essential services continue without interruption.

“On behalf of Native Public Media and the Tribal stations we serve, I want to express our deep gratitude to New Mexico’s governor and legislators for recognizing the importance of Tribal media,” said Loris Taylor, President/CEO, Native Public Media. “Their leadership sets an example for other states to follow. This support will give Tribal stations the stability they need to implement new revenue strategies, ensuring their long-term operations while continuing to inform and connect Tribal communities.”

Native Public Media is actively raising rapid response funds from foundations and donors to further support Tribal stations impacted by CPB’s defunding through its Tribal Station Fund. In addition, NPM has established the Tribal Media Endowment Fund to provide a permanent source of support for Tribal stations serving American Indian Nations.

“Tribal stations play a critical role in advancing sovereignty, preserving culture, and delivering life-saving information during emergencies. The State of New Mexico’s support is a recognition of their vital contribution to public service media and to the well-being of Tribal Nations,” concludes Taylor.

About Native Public MediaNative Public Media provides services to over 60 Native radio and television stations across the United States, serving as a resource for station operations, regulatory compliance, and training. NPM advocates for Native voices in media to ensure Indigenous communities remain informed, connected, and empowered.
